Memories from the territory is a portal aimed at gathering and spreading individual and collective memories about crucial events for communities and territories. For the time being the project focuses on three theme-based routes: war, earthquakes and catastrophes, bradyseism.
War testimonies concentrate on the experience of civilians, caught as they were between Allied bombings and Nazi violence.
At this early stage the survey on earthquakes is centered on the 1980 earthquake in Campania and Basilicata. Testimonies range from the stories told by the inhabitants of the destroyed communities to those of mayors in office in 1980. The third route includes testimonies on the bradyseism phenomenon consisting in the gradual and recurring uplift or descent of part of the Earth's surface. The town of Pozzuoli, in the Phlegraean Fields area, near to Naples, lived and recalls the bradyseism in its two last crisis - the first one on 2nd March 1970 and the second one, the most recent, which had its climax on 4th October 1983.
The Archive is intended as a work in progress, open to contributions by institutions and citizens. Cooperation from the local communities will be crucial. They could represent the main gathering point of testimonies and documents, with the perspective of becoming galleries of the memory. The citizens themselves could be the ones to build, in close interaction with researchers, their memorial museum: a museum with no restrictions of space and size.
